The Conservatives were not troubled in either of yesterday's by-elections as they held two seats in the Midlands.
In Syston Ridgeway, Leicestershire CC Stephen Hampson maintained the Tories' share of the vote compared to the 2009 election, although the other parties switched around a bit. Labour improved on their last place two and a half years ago to beat the British Nationalists and the Liberal Democrats to second place.

Over in the West Midlands the Conservatives enjoyed an emphatic victory in Yoxall, East Staffordshire DC. The 84% of the vote Beryl Behague received was a 5% improvement on May in this straight fight with Labour.
